Buses replacing trains for Labour weekend
KiwiRail and Greater Wellington are midway through a major project aimed at providing faster and more frequent commuter train services into the city. It will significantly increase capacity, reliability, and give commuters more choice around travel times, along with new hybrid electric trains on the Wairarapa and Manawatu lines.
To make it all possible, we are replacing 90-year-old signalling infrastructure at Wellington Station with a new computer-based system. Once operational, the new system will allow for more train movements in and out of the station. This complex work needs to be completed, tested, and ready to go live by early 2025.
The work scheduled for Labour Weekend is a critical part of the signalling project. The opportunity to work three days in a row is crucial, and our teams of experts – some of whom are travelling here from overseas – will be on site 24/7 to install moveable tracks, signals, and test the new equipment and systems.
